Why could one not write a cantata in memory of a dead canary? All in all, this is better than singing the glory of Stalin... Telemann is having fun here in a tragi-comic style. The text evokes the sparrow with tongue-in-cheek, but the music could equally be that of a human funeral! Surprisingly, the composer evokes nothing in the way of birdsong, which would have resulted in a (probably very amusing) pre-Messiaenesque feel.

When you look past this novelty, what you do find is Telemann at his finest, performed to much aplomb by Dorothee Mields and the wonderful Bach Concentus under the masterful direction of Ewald Demeyere.
