We celebrate the launch of Decca's new Opera Series, with beautiful new covers, aimed at re-establishing Decca as THE Opera Company. The launch sees 20 legendary Decca Opera Recordings in new and fresh packaging, using the original sleeve art, showcasing many of the greatest opera recordings ever made. Several of these recordings are reissued here at mid-price for the first time, whilst others which have been unavailable for many years make a welcome return to the catalogue.
The first batch of twenty contains some legendary recordings: Sutherland's 1971 Lucia di Lammermoor and her second Norma with Pavarotti and Caballé; Terfel and Fleming in Solti's Don Giovanni; Dutoit's Pelléas et Mélisande and his exceptional Les Troyens; Bohm's Die Walküre from Bayreuth 1967 with Nilsson, Rysanek and King. It's an impressive list!
Some of our personal favourites however are headed by the re-issue of the first in Decca's pioneering Entartete Musik Series (music banned by the Nazis): Krenek's Jazz infused Jonny Spielt Auf. I'm also delighted that Bartoli's Turco In Italia is now available at $29.99 and am particularly pleased to see the return of Gergiev's dramatic Khovanshchina - Mussorgsky's masterpiece and in my opinion the very greatest of Russian operas.
Each Opera CD in the range features a digital insert which unlocks online content including a multi-language libretto to read on a Kindle, iPad, PC or Mac, a chance to browse all other titles in the series and an opportunity to review titles and publish the reviews online. The booklets themselves contain full tracklists, production information and a detailed synopsis.
