This superb quintet performed at Birdland for a brief gig in 1954 just before Art Blakey formed the Jazz Messengers. And what a band this was with Clifford Brown on trumpet, Lou Donaldson on alto, Horace Silver on piano, Curly Russell on bass and Blakey leading the band from the drums. Highlights of this first volume are A Night in Tunisia, Quicksilver, and Brown's sensitive treatment of Once in a While. This is a classic bop album with everyone in inspired form.
