'Maria Friedman Celebrates The Great British Songbook' is based on a concert of the same name that Maria first performed at the Shaw Theatre in February 2009 consisting of a collection of the very best songs the British Isles have produced, including selections of popular music, classical music and standards from musical theatre. For Friedman, who has long been one of the leading lights of the West End and Broadway in musicals by everyone from Sondheim and Lloyd Webber to Rodgers and Hammerstein, it's an opportunity to explore a vast repertoire - a typically challenging and imaginative programme from an artist renowned for her versatility.
The songs come from a wide range of backgrounds--musical theatre, 1960s pop, and the two World Wars. Tony Award nominee Jason Carr provides original orchestrations. Apart from starring in The Woman in White on Broadway, Friedman also impressed New York critics and audiences in her residency at New York's Café Carlyle in 2003 and 2006.
